I Will Be Good

Running time: 1 hour 20 minutes

I debuted I Will Be Good in December 2008, as part of a solo show of my visual work. Since then, I’ve performed I Will Be Good throughout New England and the South.  Many of you have seen the show and it’s been great to have you in the audience! For those who haven’t seen the show, here’s what I do. Supported by a simple set, I tell the story of my unexpected transformation from good southern girl working in business to contemporary artist living in New England. The show is very funny and quite poignant, as life often is. The performance deals with family upbringing, the creative process, and mostly the universal struggle to lead a life freed from other people’s expectations.  Read an excerpt from the show.

While it may be my story, many people claim it as their own, including a gallery owner from Cuba; a retired Episcopal bishop; college students; a Jewish woman from Long Island; a transgender woman from New York; conservative Christians; and a 70-year-old man who, with tears in his eyes, thanked me for telling my story. One audience member said, “You may think that story is all about you, but it’s really all about me.”
